Asamoah Gyan, the Ghanaian striker, made a lasting impression during his time at Sunderland in the English Premier League. In the 2010-11 season, Gyan scored 10 goals in 34 Premier League matches, helping Sunderland finish in 10th place in the league standings.

Gyan arrived at Sunderland in August 2010 from French club Rennes, for a fee of around £13 million, making him the most expensive African footballer at the time. He made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut against Wigan Athletic. He continued to be a regular starter for the Black Cats, often partnering with Darren Bent upfront.

Despite scoring 10 goals in his debut season, Gyan’s time at Sunderland was not without controversy. In March 2011, he took a two-week leave of absence from the club to attend to “family matters” in Ghana. However, it was later revealed that he had been involved in a dispute with the club over a proposed loan move to the UAE. Gyan returned to the squad in early April, scoring a vital goal in a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

The following season, Gyan made a surprise move to UAE club Al-Ain on loan, and eventually made the move permanent. He later played for several clubs including Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor, and NorthEast United FC.

Gyan’s time at Sunderland was short-lived, but his impact was significant. His 10 goals helped Sunderland secure a mid-table finish in the Premier League, and he will always be remembered for his impressive debut season at the Stadium of Light.
