Manchester United has been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, suffering a 3-0 loss to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Despite winning the Carabao Cup last season, this time they were defeated by the same opponents. In the first half, Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall scored for the Magpies, and Joe Willock’s goal in the second half sealed the victory. This defeat marks the end of Manchester United’s cup run, preventing them from retaining the trophy they won at Wembley eight months ago.
In the first half, Manchester United aimed to make amends for their recent derby defeat to Manchester City and dominated the game for the opening 15 minutes. Casemiro had the first shot of the game, but it was comfortably saved by Martin Dubravka. However, Newcastle gradually gained momentum, and Miguel Almiron opened the scoring after being set up by Tino Livramento. Despite United’s efforts to equalize, Lewis Hall doubled Newcastle’s lead with a headed clearance that found the back of the net.
The second half saw Manchester United making changes, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sofyan Amrabat coming on. Wan-Bissaka injected energy into the attack and almost set up a goal for Anthony Martial, but a last-ditch challenge denied them. United had several long-range efforts, but none troubled Dubravka. In the 60th minute, Joe Willock’s goal extended Newcastle’s lead to three.
With Newcastle comfortably ahead, the game reached a stalemate, and neither side created clear-cut chances. Manchester United couldn’t mount a comeback, and their Carabao Cup campaign ended prematurely.
