The world of football and Newcastle United are anxiously waiting for updates on the status of former Newcastle winger Christian Atsu, who is currently playing for Turkish Super Lig side Hatayspor. The 31-year-old Ghanaian international was reported missing after earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria on Monday morning. While some of his team-mates and members of the club’s technical staff have been rescued from the rubble, Atsu is still missing.
Atsu played for Newcastle United for three seasons, joining the club on loan for the 2016-2017 season from Chelsea, before completing a permanent move. He was a key player in Newcastle’s successful campaign to win promotion back to the Premier League, and went on to make 121 appearances for the club. He left St James’ Park during the summer of 2021 after scoring a crucial goal in a 1-0 win over Kasimpasa on Sunday.
The earthquakes that hit the region were devastating, with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake striking south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria, followed by a second quake measuring 7.5. The disaster has claimed the lives of more than 1,700 people, and rescue teams are still searching for survivors. The world of football and Newcastle United fans are sending their thoughts and prayers to Christian Atsu and his family as they await updates on his status.
