ATWAG Calls for an Apology Over “Singing and Dancing” Comment.

The Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) has taken a stand for the arts and culture sectors, demanding an apology from Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, the mistress of the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ) in Ghana. The call for an apology is in response to a comment made by Professor Elsie during an interview on Starr FM, where she mentioned that other schools might be “singing and dancing” while PRESEC diligently prepares for the NSMQ competition.

ATWAG, a group representing writers in the fields of tourism, arts, and culture, found this statement to be inappropriate and reflective of a lack of respect for the arts, which encompass singing and dancing. In their official statement signed by their President, George Quaye, they articulate their concerns about the comment, highlighting the significance of both science and the arts in our society.

“We believe it is important to recognize and appreciate the value of both science and the arts in our society,” Mr. Quaye writes. “While science and math are undoubtedly crucial subjects, it is equally important to acknowledge the significant role that the arts and humanities play in shaping our world. They foster creativity, critical thinking, empathy, and cultural understanding.”

The President of ATWAG emphasizes that, especially in light of rapid advancements in AI and technology, it becomes even more crucial to emphasize the importance of the arts. These fields provide the emotional and imaginative aspects that AI cannot replicate, contributing to the fabric of our society and enhancing our overall well-being.

ATWAG’s plea to Professor Elsie is rooted in the need to recognize and appreciate the diverse talents and interests of students in all fields of study. The association advocates for inclusivity and respect for individuals who prioritize the arts and humanities.

In their statement, ATWAG not only calls for an apology from Professor Elsie but also urges her to consider the unintended consequences of her statement and acknowledge the insult it carries towards schools and individuals who value the arts.

They hope that she will reflect on the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that celebrates the contributions of both science and the arts.

Furthermore, the group extends their request to Primetime Limited, the producers of the NSMQ show, calling on them to address the matter promptly. Their goal is to ensure that all participants and viewers feel valued and respected.

This call for an apology by ATWAG highlights the significance of respecting all fields of study and recognizing the vital role that the arts play in our society. It serves as a reminder that a well-rounded education values both science and the arts, promoting inclusivity and understanding among students of all interests and talents.
