Ahafoman Senior High School emerged victorious in the second edition of the competition, outshining 24 other senior high and technical institutions.
With a remarkable score of 164 points in a tiebreaker against Wesley Grammar School of Accra, Ahafoman SHS secured the top spot for its innovative two-in-one generator prototype and incubator, powered by solar energy.
This cutting-edge device not only generates electricity but also serves as an egg incubator and facilitates hygienic food processing.
The triumphant Ahafoman SHS team, comprising three students and their coaches, reaped substantial rewards for their achievement. The accolades included a GH¢50,000 cash prize, an all-expenses-paid week-long trip to Japan, a four-year scholarship to any tertiary institution in the country for each team member, a desktop computer, a printer, a trophy, certificates, and various souvenirs.
Wesley Grammar School secured the second position with 150 points, receiving a cash prize of GH¢30,000, while the second runner-up, Bosomtwe Girls SHS, earned GH¢20,000. Both schools were also awarded a laptop and a printer each.
Notably, the three female contestants from Ahafoman SHS were honored with the “Girls Team Award” of GH¢5,000, and their coaches received mobile phones. The Ahafoman girls were recognized for their effective use of electricity, while Wesley Grammar was lauded for excellence in urban gardening.
All top three schools received medals, science and mathematics-based textbooks, and a one-year accident insurance cover for team members.
The event, organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), aimed to promote ideas and innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among students.
During the award ceremony in Accra, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum highlighted the competition’s goal of shifting the education focus from rote learning to a practical and innovative approach.
He encouraged the youth to collaborate and find solutions for the country’s development, emphasizing the importance of integrating Visual Arts and Home Economics into STEM.
NEIP CEO Kofi Ofosu Nkansah praised the Ministry of Education for fostering young talent through the competition. NEIP contributed by providing cash prizes to the top 10 finalists and offering business development services to help commercialize the students’ prototypes for addressing societal challenges.
Nkansah affirmed NEIP’s commitment to supporting youth in generating ideas and innovations to create employment opportunities and enhance the country’s standard of living.
In addition to Ahafoman SHS, the top 10 schools, including Swedru SHS, Dabokpa Technical Institute, KNUST SHS, St Louis, Applied Technical, and Bosomtwe STEM Academy, each received GH¢10,000 along with other souvenirs. Swedru SHS was recognized for the best clean water innovation.
The awards ceremony highlighted the commitment to nurturing innovative thinking and practical problem-solving skills among the youth for the sustainable development of the nation.
